Dr Foster, the campus therapist at Wilder University, is angry when his patients will not follow his advice. He theorizes that they will be more likely to accept the same words from a friend, rather than an authority figure, so he hires students to befriend his patients and assist in their therapy -- without the patients' knowledge or consent, of course. If your first thought is "Wait, isn't that unethical?" then you are the perfect candidate for this book.Jordan, struggling theater major skilled in improv, takes a job with Dr Foster and immediately embarks upon an adventure that will lead to two dead students, a possibly murderous "maybe girlfriend," and the realization that nothing is what it seems. The story is helped immensely by Jordan's character. He is an appealing, all-American, somewhat nerdy, college student, who just wants to do the right thing if he can figure out what it is. He is self-deprecating, quick-witted, and charismatic.
The supporting characters are delightfully weird as well, and Baker does a great job of keeping you guessing. By the end of the book, you become as paranoid as Jordan, not knowing who is working for Foster, and what is really the truth. This is a smart and engaging mystery, and the ending was perfect. I hope to read more from Baker in the future!

Head Games edition by Kevin Alex Baker Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The good
The Story This is a slow revealed plot with exceptional pacing. It's also somewhat scary because it's a scenario that is absolutely realistic. There is some scary stuff in this book if you really think about it.
The Fool One of the fun aspects of a Shakespeare play is the side character of The Fool, inserted to lighten the mood and garner some laughter. (The gravediggers in Hamlet, Feste in Twelfth Night). In this books, there are some well meaning, bumbling cops to fill this role...it's a little bit meta.
The maybe not so good
The Improv This is a bit nit-picky and I don't claim to be a professional improvisor, but the improv scenes felt a bit unrealistic.
Final thoughts I really liked this book. The story is great, the characters are well fleshed out (though the villain is a bit too evil-villainy at times), there's interesting side-stories. It's a very well put together book. It was never boring and, though it wasn't short, it felt like I was drinking a good Vodka and it slipped right down like water.
Or maybe it was like drinking water.
I love Psyche thrillers but usually go for the dark scary. I picked this up from a recommendation and am very pleased I did. It is not what i usually look for in this genre but was a fun surprise. An easy read that flowed and entertained so that I kept reading. There were really good twists and turns with alot of surprises. The personal and self deprecating humor of the main character really keeps you laughing and questioning his choices along with him.
Not what I was expecting but really glad I picked it up. Good writing style and formatted well for the .
I enjoyed reading Head Games. The narration was well written from the point of view of a college student. Very believable. The characters were interesting and, at least for the main characters, three dimensional. Dialog was realistic and many times funny. Lots of humour, especially the arguments with the character's inner voice.
Only minor nick is its written in the first person, yet there are cut-aways to sections where the narrator is absent.
Very enjoyable. I hope Baker 's next book doesn't take another 5 years. ;-)
Head Games was a book that I started at a time I really shouldn't have been reading anything else but school books. But once I started, I couldn't put it down. It was so funny, so relatable. It had been a very long time since I had a read a book that I couldn't put down. I ended up canceling a date to read this book and I am happy to inform that it was truly worth it. The author's down to earth narration as Jordan Patrick is very gripping. It is laugh out loud funny when you least expect it. I could identify myself with Julie and her insecurities. At one point, I really wanted to pry myself from the book, just so I could make it last longer. I cannot wait to read more from this author. Truly a masterpiece!
I bought Head Games a year ago, and just got a reminder from to review it. Although it's been awhile, mostly I recall reading HG in two days because it was a well written page turner.
Details I absolutely adored the quirky humor intertwined in this psychological thriller.
Kevin Alex Baker is an excellent writer who skillfully develops amazing and unusual characters - you'll either hate or love.
It is tough to mix suspense and humor, but this author did a terrific job. and wow, the multiple twists.
*I feel bad I failed to review Head Games immediately after reading, and intend to go right this moment and find any other work by
Mr. Baker.
UPDATE this is a very original story in terms of characters and settings. It does end up becoming a little too convoluted to follow though and could have been improved by revealing more inner feelings of several characters. There are a few spelling errors as well but overall they didn't detract too much from the book. In sum this is worth a deliberate read e.g. Spend time slowly reading through several chapters a night but don't speed read. While I likely won't read it again I enjoyed how it expanded my mind. By the end of it I definitely felt like someone had been playing head games with me.
I'm not finished with this book yet but the doctor is certifiably nuts. Also, I was disappointed that the author used a "men are from Mars, women are from Venus" mentality towards one of the patients. The book still holds some promise though so I'll keep reading and will update my review and rating once I finish.
